STEVEN GOH is a performance athlete. For him, building a
company is like running a marathon. "It can be a long
journey and a lot of times it may not seem like fun," he
says.
He founded Australia's first online stockbroker, Sanford
Securities, a company that listed on the ASX in 2000.
Now, Mr Goh, 40, is the CEO and founder of mig33, a
mobile social-networking company that sends more than
45 million messages a day.
Mr Goh saw an opportunity in the mobile arena with the
rise of the application environment, the collapsing of
mobile walled gardens and the shift in computing power
from the desktop to the mobile. Mig33 was born in a
library coffee shop in Perth and has passed the 12
million-member mark. Its members chat by way of
instant messaging, send emails, share photos and make
inexpensive international calls from their mobiles.
Mig33's technology works on most mobile phones, even
basic handsets, and combines a model of free and inexpensive services. By sending tens of millions of
messages and carrying their social community with them wherever they go, users create an instant
global social network. The company is taking advantage of the shift in telecommunications from
managing and tariffing the network to delivering customer services and value. As a mobile platform,
mig33 is carrier-agnostic. This is significant as it means they are able to leapfrog one of the key barriers
to creating a scalable, global mobile product.
"The mobile social-networking space is structurally different to the terrestrial internet space due to
differences in device geometry, the intensely private nature of the phone and also the
application-delivery platform. The mobile social web will be very different to the one we have on our
desktop," Mr Goh says.
"The key issues for people building social networking services in the mobile space are socialisation of
the phone as being more than a phone, sustainable business models as clarity drives investment and
funds innovation and operator interference."
Mig33 has recently raised $14.3 million in a second round of funding from Silicon Valley and Australian
venture capitalists. A former investment banker, Mr Goh says Australian VCs are very different from
American VCs.

"The model in Australia is far more structured and has more parallels to project/mezzanine finance," he says.
"The US VC model is prepared to take bigger risks on early-stage investments."
Mr Goh started coding when he was seven years old. He didn't like the rules in a Star Trek minicomputer
game, so he wrote his own set in the programming language Fortran.
One of his toughest moments was trying to raise money after Sanford listed.
"Raising capital in bear-market conditions is tough," he says. "It's also a lesson that just because you're
listed, it doesn't mean that capital is any more available."
